Raising Smarter Steelhead
Jan 3 2007, 12:06 AM EST In the 40th Anniversary Collectors Edition of the Salmon Trout Steelheader mag, this article on page 24, talks about the research done at the University of California Davis have learned that altering the enviroment of hatchery-raised steelhead can impact how the fish develop, and may even result in brainier steelhead. I have fished the Kitimat River for years and have never to my knowledge mever ever hooked a hatchery steelhead, at least one with a dorsel fin removed. Smarter steelhead makes sence to me. I would say that the hatchery steelhead are smarter then the wild steelhead, if the hatchery steelhead will not take my fly. ( Big Red ) Do you find this valuable? |

Where did the Steelhead go
Dec 10 2007, 6:25 PM EST I have read Jim Brittions comments in spey clave, and I agree with Big Red. Maybe Mr. Brittion should take some fly presentation lessons from Big Red, I did and found Steelhead. Big Red mentioned to me that it looked like the numbers were done this season, but there were a lot of factors. I also agree with Big Red, we do not need guys like Jim fishing the same rivers we do. I like to enjoy my time on the water, with or without catching fish. So my vote, says stay home Jim!. Happy fly fishermen. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Where did the Steelhead go
Dec 10 2007, 10:20 PM EST Thank you. The numbers of Steelhead appeared to be down both in the Skeena system and the Nass. One would have to have numbers and some concrete evidence that the netting at the mouth of the Skeena had anything to do with it. There are a number of factors that could account for lack of Steelhead this season. I had some great days as did some other fly fishers. High river levels made fly fishing difficult this season. For Mr. Brittons to say that we should stop buying fishing licences is rediculous. I hear the same even when it is a good year, so I stand with what I said before. We do not need his kind fishing our rivers, and he should stay home, we will certainly have more fun and be able to enjoy what we have even more, sowe do not need his $. Till later ( Big Red ) 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Where did the Steelhead go
Dec 14 2007, 5:21 PM EST Hi Jim, thanks, you are right. Healthy Steelhead runs are important, and a passion we share. My offer to spend a day on the river with you was sincere although it was also a poke in the ribs. Merry Christmas to you too. Do you find this valuable? |
