Steelhead Counts?

Hi Red,

I like the site! Do you know what the estimated escapements of steelhead to your rivers have been
over the past few years?

I hope you're right and the runs improve a bit this year (2008)

I live down in Oregon and I've fished the Skeena area before and hope to again...

Hi Steve, sorry I don't know the estimated escapements for the Steelhead for the past few years, but that informaton should be available on the fisheries site. You can find the link to that site by opening the Wiki pages window under Weather in B.C. My person records have shown a decline in Steelhead numbers over the past few years probably more to do with the nature cycle, but is on the upswing now. The Steelhead run this year looks much stronger then last year, athough river conditions were far from favourable last year. The rivers are in very good shape right now, and I lucked out last week while fly fishing for Chinook in the Skeena and hooked into a 14lb bright Steelie, nice surpise. You can also google Tyee test fishery, and they provide day to day estimated numbers for Salmon and Steelhead. ( Big Red ) Do you find this valuable?

Thanks Red, I'll look into those places and post if I find anything. I've seen lots of general estimates, but never a more specific, year-by-year / per river breakdown.

Congrats on getting a steelie already! That's probably a good sign. Down here in Oregon, the steelhead run on the Columbia is looking very strong, for both wild and hatchery fish. It is thought to be due to good ocean conditions in 2006-7-8, in contrast to bad conditions in 2004-5. I don't know how or if that translates into conditions farther north. --Steve

Here is some Tyee steelhead info:

As of July 31, 2008 the cumulative steelhead numbers are looking to be 45% UP over the 8-year average. YAY!
