Hey! a free beer, I'm in. I will mark it on the calender and see you then. You may feel right at home here, raining today, hope is, it will move the fish, cool the river temperature down, and bring on some good fishing. The rain as already taken and turned the Skeena from good fishing to poor fishing because of water clarity. Good safe trip. Till later ( Big Red )

Hi Red, I will follow your advice and tie some flies on much larger hooks. Usually when I come to BC, the Kispiox and Morice are my favorite rivers and there I use size 2 and 4 hooks. But now I will try to spend a few days on the mighty Skeena itself with Big Red look alike flies!!

I guess the Bulkley River witch is close to home and the Skeena river have spoiled me over the years, rewarding me with so many nice fish. Good luck this season, look forward to seeing some nice pics from you. Till later ( Big Red )

Thanks for your post. The rivers are looking very good. Thunder storms have been moving up the valley but have done no damage. River levels did come up a bit but clarity is good. I have spent a lot of time shaking off Pinks, but they are certainly winding down now. I managed to pickup a small Steelhead this morning, the first in the Bulkley this season. The Steelhead are moving in now, mostly fish on their journey to the Morice River. I expect to be getting into Steelies on every outing, maybe a Coho or two as they are moving up the Bulkley now as well. Till later. ( Big Red )

Hey Bram, thanks for the update, September can be good, all depends on the weather and rivers of course. Good news it is unlikely that there will be any new implementations in the 2010-11 regulations as the Quality Waters Committee has requested for funding to re-do the whole process which they say was flawed. Like we did not know this! Most B.C. anglers did not agree with the proposals being recommended by the QWC in all the meeting I attended. So things are as was, for now. Hope we meet on the river or rivers this fall. Last September on the Skeena was phenomenal for both Steelhead and Coho. The Bulkley was also fishing well, but the Steelhead were slow coming the first week, besides in early September, you can get them on a dry. We had our pants pulled down on numberous occasions, by big and really bad Steelhead, on the Skeena in Sept. Till later ( Big Red )

Hey Brambo, the Skeena River is very big, when flyfishing for Steelhead in the Skeena River you fish the river like it is only as big as your casting. Steelhead travel up the shore line and there are so many places you can walk to that are great gravel bars, you can't expect to fly fish for Steelhead in same water as others fish gear. Reading the water, look for Steelhead runs and there are many, the Skeena River will reward you ten fold. Many miles of the Skeena can be floated, by both drift boats and pontoon boats. It is difficult for those who only spend a limited amount of time in the area, compared to those of us who have fished the Skeena for decades. My advice, hire a guide for a float and some walk ins, for the future, it will reward you in the long run. Tight lines ( Big Red )

Hi Don,
It was great to meet you at Two Rivers a couple of weeks ago. You were quite right - its a great spot to stay. Well after a load of organisation the trip to Smitthers went well. The two rivers lodge was just a great base for fishing. On my first day I hooked up with a nice buck on the bend below the lodge . My first steelhead on a single handed rod. On my second day I hooked up another buck in exacly the same lie. Both taken on British style salmon flies on intermediate line. On day three I went t have a look at trout creek and had no success although lots of coloured coho were showing. On day four I went to see the Kispiox and found my way to Potato Flats area. One of the most famous pools ever and it was out due to the little heat wave we were having. I then went exploring up the Susqua which looked fantastic but you would need to know where to go. Also lots of bear sh1t about at the camp area on the Kispiox. Day five I went down river from the lodge and hooked up a really nice buck - all surface jumping and tail walking - brilliant on the fly rod. Later I caught as small female about 5lb. All in all a good week but the fishing was quite tough. The weather was hot and probably too bright. Ah well - sure beats working. Sorry there is no photos of fish. Each time I hooked up the camera was in my jacket up the bank somrwhere. Its not so easy on your own is it. I hope to visit again now that I have a better idea of what its all about.
Any way tight lines !! Phil

Hi Phil, it was great to meet you, you are right about the Lodge, and Jane and Lawrence are excellent hosts and great people. Sorry we did not get a chance to fish together, but I was very busy at the time of your visit. We will just have to set a date and time and at least get a day on the river together. Glad you enjoyed your stay, and it was nice to hear you hooked up on your first day. Stay in touch and enjoy the site. ( Big Red )

Steelies have been taken on a dry fly this late in the season, so its not impossible, but you will have better success with a dry line and wet fly, or a light intermediate line. If you can tolerate less hook ups or none, then fish a dry, bigger is better. For wet flies stay with streamer flies, or articulated, black is always a good coulour. Good luck, have a good trip. OK, here are some videos of useful casts using single-handers. They are similar to the Perry Poke casts I was referring to for Spey rods.

Since there was some interest, I'll say a couple more words about a good site: flyfishingresearch.net
I recommend the spey cast for casting heavy sink tips - the "Half out and Go" - a good way to judge your timing on when to give the forward hit on your spey cast.
Also, they mention the "Perry Poke". I haven't looked but there is probably a description of this on the web.
I highly recommend the Perry Poke. It removes the need for perfect timing on the single spey side of the river. Especially when fishing tips and/or heavy flies, it can be difficult to get the timing and power just right for the single spey. The poke allows you to place your anchor properly which will then lead to a good forward stroke.
The best spey caster I know of, Dana Sturn, showed me this trick. If you get a chance to take his course up in BC, do!

I must agree with you. There are plenty of situations that call for a little more then single hand fly rods, and I guess short of using gear, Spey rods can come into play. It comes down to preference, and also I guess I am lucky to live in an area that really does not see that much fishing pressure, at least for most of the year. Spey fishing certainly has gained in popularity over the last decade or so. Certainly learning the skills of the Spey is not a bad thing, but for me, I do very well with the single hand fly rods and I will probably never become a fan of the Spey. Again thanks for the link and your much welcomed comments and contributions. I am sure that many will gain some knowledge from the site. ( Big Red )

I have always believed if you were fishing the right tip you would have the fly at the right depth w/o having it weighted. I just returned form the Dean where I fished almost exclusively weighted flies and did very well. Much better than w/o weight. Do most of you fish weighted flies on the Bulkley and the Babine?

I hope you're right and the runs improve a bit this year (2008)

I was looking over things on the site, and I remember seeing your dog and the life jacket on the river a few times during your trip. It's a new year and I am kept very busy with fly tying. The river of course is froze over right now and closed to fishing even if it was open. My up coming picture for Feb. will be the frozen river. I always look forward to another Steelhead season, and I look forward to seeing you here again and I look forward to a float . ( Big Red )
