IT WILL BE UPDATED FROM TIME TO TIME. Whats UP? Let me know how the fly fishing is now where you are.

November 6 / 2009

Well I thought my arm was much better then it actually felt tossing a fly today. I was eventually forced to sit and watch Ted cast as I didn't want to push it, as I want give it another go on Sunday. I had a couple of pulls today, and a cast towards the shore line on my river right produced a small Steelhead, but the clarity is only about 24"s with lots of water. A little more clarity should produce better, maybe Sunday will be better. Here is a little look at the river today.

The Bulkley River is high, and the clarity is improving a little
each day.

I have plans on tossing a fly again on Sunday, and with a little luck the
river will look a little better then, also a heavier intermediate sink tip
may be a better solution, but then again I would not have been able to make the casts towards the shore had I been using a heavier sink tip today.

It will all depend on my fishing partner, if he fishes the run first, then I will fish a heavier sink tip behind him, if it plays the other way, I will probably
stay with a floating line and wet fly. Point is there are plenty of Steelhead in the river as I have spotted them moving to the surface, just need a little more clarity for those big strikes that we all like.

Till later ( Big Red )

November 2 / 2009

Well now we are into November, the rivers have lots of water now that our first now fall melted and with continuing rains. The rivers may have lots of water now but they are dirty and unfishable, so we wait. First the rivers need to clean up, the Kispiox and upper Bulkley will probably come on line first. My arm is still to sore to fly fish so I really don't mind the wait. I should be sitting at the bench and getting some tying started for this next season but have not been able work the arm even at that. The weather remains mild for this time of year and I hold out some hope of getting in some really good fly fishing before the end of December. The mountains are covered in snow and the level is added to almost daily, but it is the rivers that my focus is mainly on. Well enough for now, don't eat to much Halloween candy. Till later. ( Big Red )

October 29 / 2009

To my surprise, when I awoke this morning, to find 8 inches of snow and still snowing. I had planned to fish the Skeena this morning, but by the time my wife got up and dug the truck out of the snow, it was a little to late for that trip, so I fished the Bulkley close to home for a couple of hours and found only one small Steelhead, and noticed that the river had rose just a little. The river is still clear and the water temperature was 37f. The rivers need to rise more, that should make the Steelhead move and become more aggressive. I was planning to do a little fishing again tomorrow but for some reason I can't seem to lift my right more then a few inches, "dam" guess I will have to stand down unless it is better in the am. It is warm right now it calls for rain tomorrow with temperatures rising to 11c. There is one other thing to mention, no fishermen, that is I have seen little or no signs of other fly fishermen for better then a week. There are a few local dedicated fly fishermen like myself that are still wading these cold waters, but not many.

Our new dog Buddy is fitting in really nicely,

This picture was taken on the 28, the day before our first real snow fall.

Till later ( Big Red )

October 25 / 2009

Just to bring you up to speed, the rivers have remained very low and clear, although it has been raining the rivers have not shown any change until today, only now they are showing signs of rising, which should be a good thing as long as they do not turn. Water temperatures have returned to more of a normal seasonal temp. around 40f unlike a week or two ago they were down to 35 and 36f. I have been away from the water again, I know this is not normal, but with a new dog in the home, it was necessary. Last week was a little slow but then again I did not spend much time on the water. I do long for more time in the day to fly fish, but I always enjoy the time I do get, and most of the time I find fish, and there is no doubt that this season the Steelhead numbers are up. There seems to be lots of fish, problem is the absence of big fish, but maybe this week I will find some bigger Steelhead. Although the numbers of Steelhead fly fishermen are way down now, there are still some determined fishers out there, making it guess work as to what runs one might find undisturbed Steelhead, but that is less of a problem now the it was a month ago. Till later ( Big Red )

October 19 / 2009

After two days off the river I have plans to be wading again tomorrow. The rivers remain low and clear, and both the Skeena and Bulkley rivers continue to be fishing well. I have noticed the absence of fly fishermen this past week, this may have resulted from last weeks cold snap and the snow warnings that just did not happen. Steelhead numbers were certainly up from last year and if river and weather conditions remain good, there is a lot of fly fishing season remaining. Check out the latest videos posted and some new pictures added to the gallery, with more to come as I find time away from the river. I am waiting and looking forward to seeing and reading stories from your visit to our Steelhead rivers. Till later ( Big Red )

October 13 / 2009

Just a few lines to let you all know that the fly fishing for Steelhead in both the Bulkley and Skeena river has been nothing short of spectacular this season. It was a chilly morning with a couple of cms of snow, and along with cold winds made fly fishing a little difficult. A trip to the Skeena is in order for tomorrow. The winds on the Skeena today made it impossible to fish. It calls for a little warmer day tomorrow, so it could be interesting as long as the winds stay down. A lot of pictures are being gathered to add to the gallery later this Winter. As always it has been great to meet new friends and reacquaint with old ones. I have taken a few video clips that I will also make available with links. Tight lines to everyone. Till later ( Big Red )

October 4 / 2009

I know I have not been blogging, but the fishing has just been to good. By the time I get home I have nothing left to give. The rivers are clear dropping and the fishing has been nothing short of spectacular. I fished with three friends today drifting down the Skeena river, between the four of us we hooked up with 16 Steelhead landing half as well as a number of trout. It was a cool morning followed by a clear warm day, fishing was great and the view of the snow capped mountains surrounded by fall colors, soaring Eagles and flying geese made it a day to remember. If you are not here fishing now, you are missing out. The rivers are full of Steelhead, and at times, and in certain places, full of fly fishermen from around the glob. Till later. ( Big Red )

September 27 / 2009

Hello again friends, the Bulkley River is holding on, despite our wet weather. It was -2c when I woke this morning as I prepared to float the river with a friend. I was dressed warm but the chill was in the air that stayed with us most of the day. Like all days on the river it was spectacular, the scenery, the fish, great friends, it is like I am in a fly fisherman's paradise, hey wait a minute, I am. The rivers are all fishing good, some have lost clarity, then rebounded, and then gone out again, only to return once again. Raining again today, what happens to the rivers will only depend on how long and how hard it rains. I don't think we will lose the Bulkley and I am positive that the Skeena River will once again give me time to explore it's waters with of my favorite flies in a quest for one of these magnificent fish. The Geese are flying, getting ready to head South and the Blue Herrons are already departing, meaning for me Winter is fast approaching and my Steelheading experience on these great rivers is about heat up. Till later ( Big Red )

September 20 / 2009

Well teaching again today, but some good news the Bulkley river is already rebounding, and clarity is already coming back. Is will help spread the fishers out over much more of the river. Reports of Coho taking a fly and some fly fishers are taking multiple Steelhead each day. Of course is is all good news, the bad news is the Skeena is still not looking good but the fact that the Bulkley is rebounding as fast as this could mean the Skeena will look much better sooner, one can only hope. Till later ( Big Red )

September 19 / 2009

I guess some of you may have already heard that most of the rivers are out and high because of a week of steady rain. The upper Bulkley and the Morice are still holding and the long range weather forecast looks better. Fishing has been good and these areas that are still fishable are starting to get a little crowed as everyone heads here. It is going to take a week for the lower Bulkley, Kispiox. to clean up a bit, and expect it will be longer for the Skeena, lets just keep out fingers crossed and hope for the best. It is a tough break for those of you who have planned for a trip and only have a limited amount of time. Morice is a good option as that run should peak in the next week. Till later ( Big Red )

September 17 / 2009

The news although not all great, I have good news as well. The Steelhead have finally moved into the reaches of the Bulkley and fishing has picked up. The upper Bulkley has clear water although still a little high. The lower Bulkley is off colour as a result of the Telkwa River. The Skeena River and Kispiox River's clarity is poor but should improve. These rivers were fishing well until resent wet weather although both still remain a little high for normal. I have not had as much time on the rivers as I would have liked but plans to spend more time away from teaching to do so. Fishing pressure is also below normal but that too could change as we near October. Till later ( Big Red )

September 14 / 2009

It seems to get harder and harder to get any time on the net these days. Maybe once the upgrades are complete things will work better. Of course that is not why you are checking in, right? Well an up date on the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers, Clear water above the Telkwa River, still a little off colour below, but still very fishable. Still Pinks hanging around but slowly more and more Steelhead are showing, it is a far cry from what has been expected, but it's still early. The Skeena River has been fishing much better although the clarity is only fair. I have had days when I have not touched a fish in the Bulkley, but at best only one or two. Same on the Skeena although I hooked two large fish today, they were both runners and thrashers, and most of us know what follows this action. I will be on the Skeena again tomorrow, although not as much fishing as scouting. It is no doubt time to tune your gear up and head North for some great Steelheading on the Bulkey and Skeena Rivers. I will certainly post any pic of any good fish taken in the weeks and months to come. Till later ( Big Red )

September 4 / 2009

Well here we are into the first week of Autumn, always my favorite time. Leaves are starting to fall, rivers are lower and clean, Pinks are winding down, Coho are coming in and most of all the Steelhead are coming. After weeks of shaking off Pinks I finally picked up my first Steelhead this morning. Taken on a Mcbike Special, 2/0 weighted and on a light intermediate type three sink tip. It calls for some heavy rain Saturday, but hope that it does not hit as heavy as predicted. If the weather and river conditions hold it may be time to migrate to the Skeena River to intercept some of the bigger Steelhead. As always I will be keeping everyone informed on my outings. Till later ( Big Red )

August 24 / 2009

Another day on the Bulkley, lots of Pinks, one good hit that was either a Coho or Steelhead, but we did not hookup. River conditions above the Telkwa River are good, but the Telkwa River is mudding up the Bulkley. Cooler nights have been making it a little better. I will try and get out a few more days this week, and expect to find an early run Steehead. The ice flows this Spring have brought about some big changes to the river, filling in some runs and dredging out others. I am looking forward to this season and I will try and keep my blog up to date and let you all know how its all going. Till later ( Big Red )

August 19 / 2009

Hi everyone. I have been off line for awhile as I needed to service and pick up new parts, but I'm back. Review this page for any of last years entrees, as I will be updating this page very soon, and starting the new season from August 2009. Most of the pictures on this page can be found in the photo gallery, but not all of them. Anyway, some great news for this Steelhead season mixed with a little bad news. The bad news is right now, the Telkwa River has coloured up because of hot weather, but I expect it to clear up soon, as the nights cool down. The rivers do continue to drop, and the upper Bulkley is clear, and the Skeena does not look too bad as the Telkwa River's influence gets filtered out. The Pink run is very strong, with scattered Coho reported. There is at least 1,000 Steelhead in the Bulkley System above the tagging process going on at Morice Canyon. This is the early run Steelhead heading for the Morice and all indications are that this run looks well above past average years. I can only hope that the Bulkley, Kispiox, Babine and Skeena runs show as favorable. I have a large to-do list, but I hope to look for some of those early Steelhead later this week. I look forward to reporting on my progress this season, and look forward to meeting new friends, and meeting up with old ones on the river. Till later ( Big Red )

August 8 / 2009

Steelhead season is fast approaching, Chinook season is all over, and I am spending some time after Sockeye Salmon on the fly. Sockeye are very exciting to fly fish for. A very strong fish that hits hard and explodes out of the water like a Tarpon gone wild.
Rivers are looking very good, and are continuing to drop and clean up. If things continue the out look is very good for great water for this Steelhead season. I hope all of you are getting tuned up for this season. Till later ( Big Red )

July 19 / 2009

I agree it has been a long time since I put something in my blog, my excuse, very busy. It is Chinook season here and although I am still tying when I get a chance, fishing seems to take preference over most other things. I have hooked 3 Chinooks on a fly, but have spent most of the season so far using gear in order to put some fish up for the Winter. There seems to be a strong run of big Sockeye up the Skeena River and I will be after them with a fly in a couple of weeks. Steelhead season is just around the corner and I am looking forward to this season. I have welcomed some new members and it is always great to see the interest in fly fishing.
I am still around and try and get to my e-mails and inquirers. I am posting a few new pictures of the Chinooks on a fly. Everyone stay safe and I look forward to meeting new friends while I am on the river. Till later Big Red )

April 8 / 2009

Hello friends, thought I would let you know whats up. Spring has been slow getting here this year, still snow from my home all the way to the coast, but each days there is less and less. The Bulkley River is showing signs of breaking up, only in places can see open water. The Skeena River is the same, but more open water the closer you get to the coast. The Kitimat River is mostly open with lots of snow still on the ground where the Sun can't get at it for long. Two weeks from our float there, so I am still spending most of my time at the bench, so for those of you still waiting for your orders, I have not forgotten you. One of the guys has dropped out of our trip with other plans for the time I scheduled. If anyone is interested. We camp out, and shuttle back and forth from the camp after each drift. Leaving for 3 to 4 days in the week of the 20th of this month. I want to leave you with a little something to think about and chuckle over.

( Fact or fiction ? ) You decide. I was talking with a friend lately, he said he was sitting at home day dreaming about all future camping, and fishing trips ahead of him, when his wife comes home and excitedly says to Chuck, " I won the lottery " "I won the lottery ", still not leaving his previous train of thought say> " you mean I can get new camping gear, and fishing gear, and" but before he could continue his wife Linda says "yes" yes" anything you want. "NOW GET OUT. Till later ( Big Red )

March 12 / 2009

Just a quick note. If anyone is having trouble getting through to the site listed below for the Quality Waters Report, please e-mail me and I will send you a copy of the original letter to me. Sometimes this site is not working because of updates being done. Winter is still holding on here and my Spring Steelhead trip may be delayed. ( Big Red )

March / 2009

Hi members, the 2009 Steelhead season is fast approaching although you would hardly know that with the Winter weather continuing.

I have kept busy tying and have checked and rechecked all my gear, lines cleaned reels oiled, all ready to go. I have not been doing much work on the site, so maybe some of you could pick up some slack and let us know how things are with you, especially any fishing stories and or pictures. A big bull moose crashed through my 6 foot high fence, and luckily left through the same damaged section when he left, looks like a little fence time will be required between fishing this year.

I just received the up date on the Quality Water Management Plan, as it seems things are now again moving forward. Here is the links to the Phase 2 - loads can be done by going to http://www.cnv.gov.bc.ca/skeena/gws not some of it is lengthy, so if all you have is dial up expect to spend some time at it. Best to everyone. Till later ( Big Red )

January 20/ 2009

Congratulations to all of you in the U.S. with your new President, I pray he is good for the whole world. I want to thank everyone for all the e-mails, I am totally jealous of all of you who are casting a fly while I am stuck here in the frozen north, and stuck at my fly tying bench. I will bite my lip and wait for my chance in the Spring. Please don't stop telling me of your exploits and if you send any pictures, I will certainly put them on the blog. Good luck to all ( Big Red )

Here are the winners.

For the best wet fly, tied by Scott Doncaster.

Scott's fly was well tied and represents the color combinations that Steelhead go for. These popular colors are all presented in this fly.

Large flies are the real answer to hooking into large Steelhead.

Nice fly Scott. A spectacular display of aerobatics followed, by the time I got back up river to get some of it on video, it was down to a tug of war. As the day warmed up a little Ted and I continued to find a number of willing takers. Needless to say, a great drift down a great Steelhead River in the Canadian wilderness with these fish taking a fly, and with a great friend, for me another memorable day. The Fly is available with a 1/0 - 2/0 Stinger Hook in Gamakatsu Red Octopus, as well as a #2.

I am very interested in further field tests with this fly.

Price $9.50 each

TELKWA CLOWN

The Telkwa Clown is a great fly for Coho, but it works well also for Steelhead.
I have added thread and epoxied it to make sure the hook does not slip off the line.

Price $9.50 each

Tied on a 1/0 Gamakatsu Octopus, shown here in the actual size.

SKEENA DANCER

The Skeena Dancer is a great fly. It is very strong, and I have taken many Steelhead on one fly. The Articulated version may very well top the original. Field tests this fall may answer that question.

The Skeena Dancer is one of my favourites.

Price $ 9.50 each

This fly is tied with a 1/0 Red Octopus Hook

DEMON DANCER
The Demon Dancer is a fly I use most of the time for Steelhead. I have taken many Steelhead and Bull Trout on the Stream Demon Dancer in both the 2/0 and 3/0 Partridge Traditional Hook. I am sure that the Demon tied with this stinger hook will do as well. It will be available in 2008 tied on a 1/0 2/0 and as shown here in the 3/0.

( Picture to be added )

JAQUI'S CLOWN
Jaqui's Clown is a fly the Pink Salmon will not leave alone. If you can get this fly past the Pinks, Coho can be found.

This fly is tied on a # 1 Octopus Hook.

Price $ 9.50 each

Luis' Popsicle Clown

Price $9.50 each

This fly is tied with a 2/0 Octopus Hook, the leader is Tyger Wire

RUBY'S RAGE
Ruby's Rage has been a great fly since coming on the scene. I have hit many big Steehead with the traditional 3/0, so I hold out good hope for the articulated version. Also tied with 2/0 Octopus, and !/0's, #1's, and #2's

Ruby's Rage shown here tied with an Octopus
Size 2 hook.

Price $ 9.50 each

GREEN DEAN
Look out for this one, I have a couple of Chinook flies I have been fishing with for years, but I wanted to stir things up, so this articulated monster should do that. It is tied on a 4/0 Octopus Red, and is also available in 3/0, shown below. You don't want to go with a small hook in this case.

The Green Dean is tied with 30lb test Tyger leader. This leader is a plastic coated wire leader, so strength to tackle the big Chinook is not a problem.

The 4/0 Red Octopus hook is very strong, and needed for these big fish.

Price $ 10.50 each

The Grean Dean in the 3/0 also comes with a very strong Octopus hook.

Chinook are very aggressive feeders and will attack these flies hard, while in their spawning rivers the need to feed is no longer an issue but their aggression seems to escalate.

Price $ 9.50 each

SCARLET DANCE

The Scarlet Dancer is a great Steelhead fly, and has also taken many Chinook.

I use the Scarlet Dancer a lot in the Bulkley River especially while going after the big Bucks or last through the run. The Scarlet Dancer fishes well weighted.

This fly is tied with a size 2 stinger hook, and is also available in a 1/0 & 3/0 for fishing Chinooks.

Guest Book

WELCOME TO THE BIG RED FLY BOX GUEST BOOK. Just click on Threads below and leave us a hello.

Thanks ( Big Red )

MEMBERS' PICTURES AND STORIES

Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger sung it a long time ago: "this could be the last time, maybe the last time I don't know"
As far as I know the MoE is now busy with the AMP and maybe next year lots of things will change.
I just booked 2 flights from Amsterdam to Smithers on Friday September 11 (oops)
I know it's maybe a little early for prime time steelheading, but we have other plans in October.
I also booked a Dodge Ram Van pickup truck at Thrifty's so we can transport our pontoons easily.

For me it is my 15th time and for my friend his 10th time to visit Steelhead Country and we do hope it will not be our last.
We don't mind paying more for licenses, but an 8-day license is too short for us and we also want to have the opportunity to change rivers when the circumstances ask for it, like high or coloured water.
Anyway, tranpsortation has been arranged and for 1 week we have a cabin at the Kispiox Steelhead Camp.
The 2nd week we will probably stay in Houston and do the Morice and Bulkley.
We have to check our fly boxes and also have to tie some new ones.
We will check our rods, reels and lines. Over and over again.
We are counting the days till September 11th, although we both have antother fishing trip scheduled. Erwin goes to Ireland and I will go to Sweden, both for some pike fishing. But that cannot be compared with our steelhead adventures in the Skeena Region!
"this could be the last time, maybe the last time I don't hope so"

Greetzzzzz,
Bram

To all Members, this page is for you to add pictures and stories of your trip to B.C. fly fishing for Steelhead.
All you do is click on the EasyEdit Button, and your EasyEdit Tool Bar will appear. We managed to stay an additional four days up north because we hit a wolf on our way home about an hour outside of the Morice. We tried to float/hike/explore all of the rivers we could during our trip. These included the skeena, kalam, bulkley, morice, kispiox, and babine. We probably spread ourselves a bit thin, but it was nice to see all of the rivers. The photo below was one of the first steelys we hooked on the Morice. I read about the Morice having some of the smaller fish, so when tyler landed this beauty we were pretty excited for the other rivers.

We had most of our action on the Morice, which is also the place we spent most of our time. The third person in our group was shannon who promised that if he got his first steelhead on this trip he would buy his own gear. Well shannon, no excuses now. The next photo shows one of the nice ones shannon landed that absolutely took him to town. Almost all of the fish we hooked into gave us an amazing acrobatic fight.

The other aspects of the trip were as enjoyable as covering the km's and km's of perfect steelhead runs. We had a number of nice black and grizzly bear encounters. Although our hike down the babine didn't produce any fish, the grizzly bears in the area made it a nice excursion. All of the folks we ran into along the way were very nice and helpful. The folks at McBike in Smithers hooked us up when we needed something and the people in Burns lake, while waiting for a new RAD, made our stay fun eh. Crystal and the gang from Mulvaney's Pub didn't mind waiting to much I hope as we fished thegame and our brews.
I also wanted to thank Big Red for allowing me to pick his brain via email over the last month. Very helpful and knowledgeable of the area and although casting the 3/0 hooks weren't the easiest we managed to get some fish on his flies. I might have to try out a spey rod to get those out, just joking Red, I'll stay with the 9 foot sticks. Hope to see you on the river again soon.

stu

Fly Fishing Tips

Please leave any comments, or questions at the bottom of this page by using the toolbox. ( Add a comment )

Besides the tips and tricks I can tell you about there is much more to read and learn about in the following on line magazine.

http://www.midcurrent.com/ but the best reading you could ever do is work by Roderick Haig-Brown, by far my favorite because of its accuracy is A Passion For Steelhead by Dec Hogan. You could only write a book like this if you had spent many. many hours on the rivers. I lent my copy out, but have never had it returned, some day I hope. Sharing ones knowledge and experience to others is rewarding, thoughtful, and to me always appreciated.

I spent a good part of my life guiding on the Skeena Watershed, but most of my life has been spent in the pursuit of Steelhead in these waters on a fly. Once you have mastered the fly cast whether it be single hand or you are one of the many who have taken up the Spey, you have just started. You now need to learn everything else from water currents, temperature, barometric pressure, structure, and a whole lot more just to give yourself the opportunity to consistently hook into and land one of the greatest sport fish on a fly that you will ever encounter . Sure you can cast a fly, bring the line in and cast again, and occasionally you will make connect with a wild Steelhead on the other end, only because the Steelhead is a predator that just can not help but attack a good looking and attempting meal, or because they just can not help themselves.
The Skeena River Steelhead first enter the system in July, and don't pass that way again until they are their way to Sea in June 11 months later. I have seen hundreds of Steelhead in schools heading up river in August, and as many as a dozen holding in places farther up the system in late August and September, and later in November.

On this page I hope to give you some tips, I call them tricks, that will hopefully increase your success. Remember not all flies catch fish, but have confidence in the fly you are using, and what you are intending to do otherwise you may as well go home.

So we begin by determining that you are pretty confident you can cast a fly and may even be a master at that craft, but is that all it takes to bring Steelhead to that fly, not just occasionally, but consistently? If not then this is where I will try to help you to understand just what you need to be thinking about and doing to make this happen.

Casting - I guess you can say casting is # 1 in what it takes to be successful in this art of fly fishing for steelhead. Focus on casting, but you can continue to learn all the other aspects, like fly presentation, structure, mending etc. You can read all you want about casting and fly fishing for Steelhead, but no written or detailed illustrations, or hands on fly fishing instructor will make you a professional fly caster, but it will all help put it together if you practice, practice, practice. A hands on fly fishing instructor if you are just starting out or you want to sort a few things out, so you know exactly where you are going wrong.

Its like you have fished down runs with no previous problems, and you thought that you had it all figured out, so why can't I do it now, you ask. If it starts to go wrong, slow down, stay focused and it will all come together in a slow rhythmic cast that will unfold the fly line and you see the fly being delivered effortlessly out over the water depositing it, right where you wanted it. If it does not, call 911, but better yet ask for help, and get back on track, but don't take it out on the equipment, it can still do want it was made to do.

Learning is never ending, to make longer casts with a single hand rod, while casting sink tips, is to let the forward cast anchor for a mini second as the fly hits the water, as you lift it out you are loading your rod, and making it work as it were intended. With a spey cast too, your formation of the "D" as well as placing of your anchor, and how well you do that will determine what happens with you deliver your forward cast.

Everyone has their own style, and choice of tools, but we all have the same goal, and that is to cast well, so that it becomes second nature, and then we can get down to business, hooking Steelhead.

Line Choice -

I guess you have heard many say you need to get your fly on the bottom to be successful in catching Steelhead on a fly.

( False ) I know, this is what I was told when I first started fly fishing way back when muscle cars were most of the traffic on our highways. I have learnt from experience, that this is not true, in fact it is the wrong way to fly fish for Steelhead on the fly.
If you want to have more success try and stick with a dry line and or a light intermediate fly line. You can elect to lose flies on the bottom, break off and have to replace tippets or you can get educated, have more fun and hook more Steelhead, by getting your flies up off the bottom. There are still fly fishermen & some guides that will tell you to fish on the bottom, if they are, you getting bad advise.

There are a few examples when you can fish a heavier sink tip, but when you are doing so, it will become apparent that this method is not a lot of fun, nor is it really more successful, but you will find you can use them, so don't get rid of all your real heavy sink tips. You can use weighted flies with light sink tips, but still stay off the bottom, they fish better, and seem to be more productive. it's the way I prefer to fish.

Ted has been learning from my experience and is
getting rewarded.

Spending more time on the water, eyes open observing, and listening and experimenting, can only make fly fishing for Steelhead more fun then you could have ever imagined.

It takes more then just casting a fly out onto the water, bring it back in and continue to repeat this with out knowing anything of the water you are fly fishing in or what structure is out there, much, much more.

Tippets -

Steelhead are not line shy, so you do not have to go to altra light tippets that will just not hold up with some of the big Steelhead in the Skeena water Shed. It would be safe to stay with a 15lb tippet, although I do sometimes go to a 20lb tippet in the Skeena River, and also when flyfishing for Chinooks there and in rivers like the Kispiox, Kitimat.

Where to find Steelhead -

Since I have spent most of my life in pursuit of Steelhead in the Skeena River water shed, I can help you there, but the key to being very successful is something in what Mantracker says when he says " know your land, and know your prey." I say " know your water, and know and observe your prey". I have spent more hours on the water observing Steelhead, where they are holding, where they are travelling, and how they react to a fly.

Steelhead hold around structure, ahead as well as behind rocks, in bowls, trenches, in riffles. I spend most of my first time on the river each year checking out runs, observing where the structure is, check to see if known structures have been affected by shifting gravel and small rocks during Spring runoff. This way when the Steelhead are in, I will know where they will be holding.
I am constantly watching the surrounding water below me to spot a nose appear above the surface or a tail, this gives me a general idea in what lanes Steelhead are travelling in. Although most times travelling Steelhead do not strike, it is not always the case. Besides sometimes this kind of movement may come from holding Steelhead, as they are not always glued to the bottom as some seem to think. Steelhead seldom travel or hold near structure alone, there could be two three or even a half dozen Steelhead all holding close together.

Don't waste your time trying to toss a fly into some deep hole in hopes of properly presenting a fly that will be eaten instantly, yes there may very well be Steelhead down deep in these holes, but more then likely they are there because they were spooked, and would probably not take a fly if it hit them on the nose. Most Steelhead will be found in less then 6 feet of water, and as shallow as 12 to eighteen inches. Steelhead will hold more in an even flow of current, this is hard to determine some times as a run with a riffle at the top, and with all kinds of structure, and the tail out where the current starts to pick up speed.

The depth of the water and the surface current will allow you to determine just exactly where Steelhead are more likely to be holding, and of course wading these runs, will help you more for the next time you fish it. Reading your water will take some time and experience, but once you learn you will just be a few more steps closer to becoming a Steelhead Master in his or her Zen. Before you get to excited, learning proper fly presentation is 90% of the whole game, so you see you are a long way off, but getting the experience is a big part of this incredible and breathtaking journey.

What fly is best?

There are a lot of good flies out there and some just don't fish well for Steelhead, but the fly is not as important as having the confidence with the fly that you are using and that you present it properly to holding and traveling Steelhead. Steelhead see colours real well, so pay attention to the clarity of the water, weather, water temperature, and the fly you are using, and keep a record so that you can refer to it. Most fly fishers have certain flies they use for certain times, others just don't know why they are always changing from one fly to an other, but probably because nothing seems to be working.

My best tip for Skeena water shed Steelhead is to use big flies, these Steelhead are always willing to take on a big prize.

Rod Choice -

Although I am not referring to fly fishing with a Spey Rod, just single hand rods, a 7-8 weight 9 1/2to 10 foot is plenty although some times in the Skeena river with some of the crazy brutes I feel under gunned, but that just makes the rewards more worthy. Just so the Speyers are not left out 7-8 weight Spey are also good, I just think that a 14 foot Spey Rod for these great fish is a little of an over kill, most of the time. Besides you can do a lot more with a single hand rod, like presenting the fly in the water much longer, getting a better dead drift, prior to any start of a swing, and of course retrieving a fly and executing the Butterfly on the straight hand down. I might also add that both the Spey and Single hand rods have both their pros and cons. Spey fishing has certainly caught on big time in the last 20 years, but I still do prefer the single hand rods.

Fly Presentation -

This is the meat of fly fishing, once you think you have every thing figured out and then learn proper fly presentation and why, you then realize this is what it all comes down too. You will be finding and hooking more Steelhead then ever before, this is what you have always dreamed of.

One of the biggest mistakes that fly fishers make is on what is called the mend. The mend is a movement of the fly line belly out of the river current close to you so that you can slow the fly down and not have the current pull the belly of the line in a big arc hence pulling the fly down the river faster then you want to present it. You can watch a good fly caster do this with both a single hand rod and a Spey rod. The objective of this maneuver is to slow the fly down but not to move the fly at all. A very difficult thing to do, which takes a lot of practice, but very important. So important that it is better not to mend at all then to mend poorly and pull the fly out of its natural drift. It is virtually impossible to mend a spey without moving the fly, but it can be done with limited movement when done correctly.

The mend done correctly, with single hand fly rods can eliminate any and all fly movement, which will allow the fly to drift and sink undisturbed until to starts into a natural drift across the run, called the swing. A mend of this nature is very helpful in executing the dead drift.

Unlike the more natural casts, which is normally down and across the current at the 1 o'clock, 12 o'clock being straight across the river, the dead drift is started by casting to the 10 o'clock to 11 o'clock up stream and with a proper mend this allows the fly to sink and drift naturally down river farther before starting the swing. If the fly is not jerked and is allowed to drift and sink naturally, can attract Steelhead holding in mid waters staged to strike, to do just that. Fishing with heavy sink tips will not allow you to accomplish this as the line and fly will sink to the bottom. For this maneuver to be successful it can only be done with light intermediate sink tips, unless the speed and depth of the water allows.

( This Page is being rewritten and up graded ) Big Red

Local Fishing Report

LETS SEE WHAT RIVERS ARE TAKING SALMON AND STEELHEAD ON A FLY.

Go to Mcbike site http://www.mcbike.bc.ca/bike.html and you can get river levels and history, and pontoon and drift boat rentals.

On Line Fishing Magazine, lots of informative fly fishing information. http://www.midcurrent.com/

For great fly fishing lines and to see what new with Scientific Anglers lines go to http://www.scientificanglers.com

FOR UP TO DATE FISHING REGULATION AND LICENCE INFO LOOK UNDER WEATHER B.C.
ON NAVIGATION IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER.

Although there are many Steelhead Rivers in the area I personally spend most of my time fly fishing in the Bulkley and Skeena Rivrs, but on occasions visit the Kispiox, Copper and Kitimat Rivers.

**********************************************************************************************************************

SKEENA RIVER -

The Skeena River has an excellant Salmon and Steelhead run, as well as all the other Salmon like Chum, Pinks, Sockeye and Coho. Chinook can be taken starting around July, until Mid August, when the river is clear these big fish can be taken on a fly. September, October, and at times well into November the Skeena is an excellent river for large runs of Steelhead on a fly.

*********************************************************************************************************************

BULKLEY RIVER -

If you are in the area, the Two Rivers Lodge is a great place to stay. Steelhead can be found starting around the first of September, but on some years they can be found in the river as early as the middle of August. Fly fishing with both dry flies and wet flies can be very successful.

Round Lake Resort
COZY COTTAGES AND RV AT ROUND LAKE RESORT.

A PEACEFUL FOUR SEASONS HOLIDAY DESTINATION OR LODGING FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT IN THE BULKLEY VALLEY.

TREAT YOURSELVES, WE ARE OPEN ALL YEAR.

HOSTS - WAYNE AND NINA HAMELIN
We are - ( PET FRIENDLY )
( 250-846-9160 or cell 877-2010

info@roundlakeresort.com www.roundlakeresort.com

Summer day use - sailboat and canoe rentals available.

SPEAK OUT

SPEAK OUT - WHATS IT ABOUT?

HI I'M BIGRED ( DON ) AND THIS PAGE IS ABOUT INTERESTING FLY FISHING DISCUSSIONS.

IF YOU HAVE A TOPIC THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GETTING DIFFERENT VIEWS OF, THEN PUT IT IN THE COMMENT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE.

CURRENT DISCUSSION:

Angling Management Plan Skeena Quality Waters Strategy

Most recently a leaked draft of recommendations to be put forth for the upcoming 2010-11 fishing regulations has been a concern for many stakeholders.

I have read this draft, and certainly do ( not ) agree with most of these recommendations. Based the the voices of resident anglers, guides and local business owners at meetings held, they also do not agree. I do agree that based on the stats at certain times of the peak Steelhead season at certain places on certain rivers there is a high concentration of anglers, and there could be in the future the need to restrict these activities to avoid over crowding. I do not believe we are there yet. The overall affects of any proposed lottery system on local businesses has not really been addressed, and this is an issue that must be addressed. We have always promoted tourism, and our rivers are world renowned for the sports fishing. For those of you who are non-resident and alien anglers, remember Alan Dolan & Associates are not speaking the truth when they site stats saying that we, local residents, anglers, guides and business people are for the recommendations being released, because clearly we are not and are continuing with every effort to be heard, that we are against them. Of course a swift cold river means big healthy fish, and the Skeena is known for it's world record Chinook, and also some of the largest steelhead in the world navigate these waters. Steelhead run in these waters all year long, and the islands and back channels, and deep pools created by this mighty river are a perfect place for these gray ghosts.

To give you an idea of the size of this vast paradise, one of its tributaries, the Gitandiox River is surrounded by 56,800 hectares of wilderness. Some of the other tributaries of the giant Skeena are the Sustat, Babine, Kispiox and Bulkley Rivers just to name a few.

This is one of the Chinook taken on the Skeena. Although it was taken on gear by this young lady, many are taken on the fly. Mid July is prime time for these big boys and the river and most of its tributaries are full of migrating Chinook.

The Skeena River is my favorite river, and once you have fished it, I am sure it will be yours. Starting in September the river is usually very accessible by walking into different runs to fly fish for steelhead.

This is one such Chinook taken on a fly in the Skeena River.

I like the new feature that allows me to add photos
to an album and show you as this slideshow.

Fly Fishing For Atlantic Salmon - by Scott Doncaster

Lodging

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Funny Fishing Videos

Fishing Regulations

Regulations

www.env.gov.bc.ca./fw/fish/regulations

FLY FISHING CLASSES

:Welcome to the Big Red Fly Box, Fly Fishing School:

The following courses are available, using a single hand fly rod, 7/8 with 8 weight line.
The courses here are designed to help you fish for and hook more Salmon and Steelhead.
Flies used will be from the Big Red Fly Box collection of streamer flies mostly.

Beginners:

Learn to fly fish, even if you have never picked up a fly rod, in this course you will be taught, two basic casts, the simple fly cast, and the roll cast. There are also lots of Bull Trout to keep your blood flowing. ( Big Red ) These pictures were provided by Sandy ( spey guy ) nice fish Sandy.

The Kallum River is a busy place in the Spring. Not only are the Steelhead moving down into the river to spawn, but an early run of Chinook Salmon arrive, and both can be taken on a fly rod.

The Chinook average between 10 and 30 lbs, and there are Steelhead in the 40" range to encounter. A later Summer run of Chinook have fish ranging from 10 to 100 lbs+.

In early Spring Steelhead are aggressive and their numbers dominate the number of Chinook in the river. Bull trout are also abundant in the river, as they target the eggs of spawning Steelhead.

A nice little buck, that posed for a pictur.e. It was getting a little late in the season here, as the Chinooks had already moved into the river, but a little of both makes it more exciting.

Here a Chinook is in a hurry to get back to where it had been enjoying the morning.

Chinooks at this time of the year can reach around 40lbs, Later in the Summer can reach 50 to 100 lbs.

Chinooks will get your blood pumping for sure.
Sandy is holding up a nice bright Chinook.

A friend hooks into a little Bull Trout, the Kallum has a strong Bull Trout population.

Sandy sent in some great pictures of his trip to the Kallum River this Spring. I have more of them to add when time permits, thanks Sandy for your contribution
