Hi Red, I will follow your advice and tie some flies on much larger hooks. Usually when I come to BC, the Kispiox and Morice are my favorite rivers and there I use size 2 and 4 hooks.
But now I will try to spend a few days on the mighty Skeena itself with Big Red look alike flies!!

Thought I would drop a line and see how the river is shapin up...I am hearing good things about the run this year and looks like the water levels are good as well. maybe you could let me know how the run is starting up. it is always a good time to get a feel for it when the pinks are in. Thx and talk to you soon

Hi Red, what size hooks do you use for your flies? Normally I tie my flies on #2 or #4, but your flies seems to be tied on much larger hooks.
Btw. I like the patterns! greetzzz, Bram |

Hey Bram, thanks for the update, September can be good, all depends on the weather and rivers of course. Good news it is unlikely that there will be any new implementations in the 2010-11 regulations as the Quality Waters Committee has requested for funding to re-do the whole process which they say was flawed. Like we did not know this! Most B.C. anglers did not agree with the proposals being recommended by the QWC in all the meeting I attended. So things are as was, for now. Hope we meet on the river or rivers this fall. Last September on the Skeena was phenomenal for both Steelhead and Coho. The Bulkley was also fishing well, but the Steelhead were slow coming the first week, besides in early September, you can get them on a dry. We had our pants pulled down on numberous occasions, by big and really bad Steelhead, on the Skeena in Sept. Till later ( Big Red )

Hi
I'm a novice filyfisherman with a pontoon boat and river raft looking for places to put in on the lower Kalum & Copper. I have a bunch of vacation time coming up and hope to spent many days on the river. |

Hi Don,
It was great to meet you at Two Rivers a couple of weeks ago. You were quite right - its a great spot to stay. Well after a load of organisation the trip to Smitthers went well. The two rivers lodge was just a great base for fishing. On my first day I hooked up with a nice buck on the bend below the lodge . My first steelhead on a single handed rod. On my second day I hooked up another buck in exacly the same lie. Both taken on British style salmon flies on intermediate line. On day three I went t have a look at trout creek and had no success although lots of coloured coho were showing. On day four I went to see the Kispiox and found my way to Potato Flats area. One of the most famous pools ever and it was out due to the little heat wave we were having. I then went exploring up the Susqua which looked fantastic but you would need to know where to go. Also lots of bear sh1t about at the camp area on the Kispiox. Day five I went down river from the lodge and hooked up a really nice buck - all surface jumping and tail walking - brilliant on the fly rod. Later I caught as small female about 5lb. All in all a good week but the fishing was quite tough. The weather was hot and probably too bright. Ah well - sure beats working. Sorry there is no photos of fish. Each time I hooked up the camera was in my jacket up the bank somrwhere. Its not so easy on your own is it. I hope to visit again now that I have a better idea of what its all about. Any way tight lines !! Phil

Hi...I will be up fishing in the Terrace area from OCt.19-25 at Nicholas Dean Lodge. Will it still be possible to fish dry"s and catch steelhead at this time in the season? If so, what would be the best flies to use?

OK, here are some videos of useful casts using single-handers. They are similar to the Perry Poke casts I was referring to for Spey rods. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mibddi-rBxM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAfrHDzAUM0 --steve |

Since there was some interest, I'll say a couple more words about a good site: flyfishingresearch.net
I recommend the spey cast for casting heavy sink tips - the "Half out and Go" - a good way to judge your timing on when to give the forward hit on your spey cast. Also, they mention the "Perry Poke". I haven't looked but there is probably a description of this on the web. I highly recommend the Perry Poke. It removes the need for perfect timing on the single spey side of the river. Especially when fishing tips and/or heavy flies, it can be difficult to get the timing and power just right for the single spey. The poke allows you to place your anchor properly which will then lead to a good forward stroke. The best spey caster I know of, Dana Sturn, showed me this trick. If you get a chance to take his course up in BC, do! --steve

I have always believed if you were fishing the right tip you would have the fly at the right depth w/o having it weighted. I just returned form the Dean where I fished almost exclusively weighted flies and did very well. Much better than w/o weight. Do most of you fish weighted flies on the Bulkley and the Babine?

Hi Red,
I like the site! Do you know what the estimated escapements of steelhead to your rivers have been over the past few years? I hope you're right and the runs improve a bit this year (2008) I live down in Oregon and I've fished the Skeena area before and hope to again... --Steve
